SOCIEDAD LATINA x BOSTON UNIVERSITY WHEELOCK

Role: Director

"Sociedad Latina's STEAM Team is an after-school program for middle school and high school students that aims to create the next generation of Latine leaders who are confident, competent, self-sustaining, and proud of their cultural heritage."

Client's Objective:

  • Focus on the community-university collaboration that involves multiple layers of partners and collaborators.

  • Affirm positive cultural identities that build resiliency and continue Latine cultural traditions in our community. Elevate youth voices in decision-making processes that affect their lives, opportunities, and communities.

  • Create a 1-2 minute video (open to 3-4 minutes) that would share our activities and accomplishments with internal stakeholders, potential partners, and funders.

Solution: Our team created a 3-4 minute promotional video that highlights the collaboration between Sociedad Latina and BU Wheelock, Physics, the Center for Future Readiness (CFR), and the Office of Government and Community Affairs (GCA), and their efforts to bridge the gap between STEAM careers and low-income Latine youth. The video features an interview with Alex Oliver-Davila (Executive Director of Sociedad Latina) and Kimberly Howard (Associate Professor at Wheelock) about Sociedad Latina, its partnership with Boston University, and the STEAM Team program. We interviewed Brat Luciano Noboa, a Sociedad Latina middle school alum, about the positive impact the program had on him. Aiming to have a positive and encouraging perspective on the collaboration, we covered Alex and Kimberly's plans for the program for the future.

BU INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY

Role: Director of Photography

"Founded in 2022, the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS) pioneers research to advance a sustainable and equitable future, convening faculty across the university’s diverse schools and colleges. Our focus on planetary and environmental health, climate governance and sustainability transitions, and energy systems of the future is grounded in equity and justice, robust data science, and real-world impact."

Client's Objective:

  • A 3-minute video that features students working on sustainability research convened by IGS (e.g., BU Campus Climate Lab, IGS graduate student summer fellows program) that leads to further impactful, student-led work in this area.

  • Build awareness of IGS’s interdisciplinary sustainability research among BU students across the university (both undergraduate and graduate level), especially as the student body continually changes from semester to semester

  • Encourage students to get involved in sustainability and climate research (e.g., propose and/or lead related projects while receiving mentorship and funding from IGS).

  • Authentic and inspirational, putting students in the spotlight to share in their own words what excites them or is meaningful about their research; what’s been surprising; and/or what’s been their biggest challenge, accomplishment, or frustration in problem-solving or
    in effecting change.

Solution:

A 3-minute promotional video showcasing student-led Campus Climate Lab sustainability projects at Boston University, promoting the initiatives of the Institute for Global Sustainability. Primarily influenced by the detailed script that highlights the sustainability initiatives at Boston University. Central to shaping our video’s direction are the narratives and projects focusing on the contributions of students such as Manpreet Kaur Singh (Program Coordinator), Benjamin Pedi (IGS Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer student), Claudia Diezmartínez (Ph.D. Candidate in Earth & Environment and a 2023 IGS Graduate Student Summer Fellow), Matthew Kalinowski (Co-President of BU's Growing Community), and Coco Galusza (student researcher for Growing Community). Their unique perspectives and experiences inform the project, providing an authentic and multifaceted view of the Institute for Global Sustainability’s efforts in sustainability and climate research. The stories of these individuals emphasize the significance of student-led initiatives and the impactful work being conducted within the Campus Climate Lab and other IGS initiatives. This focus ensures that the video not only underscores the university's commitment to environmental issues but also highlights the vital role students play in driving change and innovation in sustainability.
